Kaunos

The Lake

Loggerhead Turtles

A small rowing boat at the end of the quayside takes you across the river. Walking under the rock tombs you will eventually reach the ruined city of Kaunos. At the time of Troy (also in Turkey which was part of Greece at that time) Kaunos was a more famous and a more important city. Helen's notiriety changed that. Mount Ararat is also in Turkey and it is in this range that Noah's arc was supposed to land. St Nicholas (the Greek Saint and our Father Christmas) was born a little way down the coast and the walks of St Paul of Tarsus are much publicised in the area

Storks migrate here in springtime to lay their eggs, whilst they have the croaking frogs are in plentiful supply, to feed their young. There are lizards, snakes, cicadas, praying mantis and scorpions up in the mountain. We have had a resident owl in our chimney for most of the year and one of the pictures shows one of a family of birds of prey that nest in Karadag mountain behind the villa. David Belamy is still active in Dalyan and is shown with Amanda at a fund raising do in 2010. The loggerhead turtle have now a hospital at the road end of the beach.
